STE[A]M Biology

STE[A]M Approach to Teaching Biology involves the instruction of biology by intimately incorporating a more technology & engineering perspective. Multi-disciplinary approach. A molecular Approach.

Specific diseases or disorders could be investigated as the primary principles are emphasized. CANCER, in particular, is a wonderful way to enhance the study of biology and the direct impact genetic interactions play in the formation of the disease. Pathogenesis of bacterial agents or viral agents would also serve as a wonderful way to bring life to biology (pun intended). Labs should involve the disease or disorder as the center-piece of investigation.

The following key features will be incorporated into this course:

1. Tissue culturing/engineering of HeLa cells
2. Access to EM or SM microscopy
3. Transformation of cells using bacteria
4. Computer Aided Design:
-3D modeling and animation/simulation of biological processes; biomedical imagery
-Virtual reality may also be explored
-3D printing of subjects as models, teaching manipulatives
5. Visits from research, medical professionals
6. Computer programming to create simulation applications, bioinformatics tools (Java/Python)
7. Authentic biotechnology laboratory skills and procedures
8. Authentic field research
9. Genetic analysis; pcr, gel electrophoresis, protein analysis
